I sent my Mom a link to some knitted Daleks in September 2007 because she is a very accomplished knitter and I thought she would appreciate them. I included my Dad in the email because I knew she had no idea what Daleks where.
Secretly I also wanted her to make them for me. She obviously knew exactly what I was about and I received them a few months later for Christmas. I’m pretty sure she enlisted my brother, who is an engineer from head to toe, with the hope that he could add a button inside to emit “Extermiknit! Extermiknit!” in a robotic voice like some scifi Elmo.
Voices were never granted, but the Daleks live happily on my desk at work where they act as a signal for certain British scifi geeks to comment.
Why are they at work you ask and not in a cherished nook of a prominent living room bookshelf? Well, my wife suggested that they might be “happiest” there.
Here is the link I sent my mom http://boingboing.net/2007/09/13/extermiknit-knit-you.html
You can see a great variety of knitted Daleks by searching for “Extermiknit” at flickr. I really think my Moms are some of the best out there. http://flickr.com/search/?q=extermiknit
